ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Police have charged an Asheville woman with trying to claim $1 million with an altered lottery ticket.Michelle Ryans, 39, was arrested Tuesday night. She is charged with obtaining property by false pretense.According to the arrest warrant, Ryans used an altered Cash Spectacular lottery ticket to try to claim more than $1 million from the North Carolina Lottery on April 4.
Officials said Ryans cut and pasted numbers from non-winning tickets to match the winning number.Lottery officials said that the process for validating tickets is automatic and is based on barcodes, so the fraud was discovered immediately.Ryans is being held on a $5,000 bond at the Buncombe County jail.
