They could have gone to Hawaii, or Los Angeles, or any number of cities in the world, but they chose Cleveland, Ohio. The group arrives this weekend.

"We chose Cleveland because we wanted to see the King, also known as LeBron James, play," explains Arnold Demoski, one of the students making the trip. "I also know that the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame is in Cleveland."

Classmate Henry Madros agrees. "The reason I selected Cleveland was because I wanted to meet LeBron James in person," Henry said.

"Where I am from a lot of people watch the Cavs and I wanted to watch them play against a competitive team. In Alaska, we don't have big teams like the Cavs. We only have small college teams," he explained.

Henry outlined life in his village of 338 people, almost all of whom are Athabascans, a Native American group.

"The people in Alaska live their lives by waking up and going to work like any ordinary person," Henry pointed out. "Other people who don't have jobs go out and haul wood to sell for firewood or go trapping to get fur to sell. We also live off the land. We go out and hunt moose and catch fish to dry."

His classmate Brittany Smith added, "We live in a small village with a little more than 300 people, and the main transportation is snowmobiles and four wheelers. We eat moose and fish. We do not have fast food or big grocery stores."

About her five day trip to Cleveland, Brittany said, "Hopefully, it will be a fun and interesting change. When getting to Cleveland I expect to see and do a lot of things I never did before."

"Going to this city is going to be a complete change of atmosphere from what we are used to."

The five high school seniors will be accompanied by former Clevelander Laura Barnett, who moved to Nulato a few years ago to be a school counselor.

She has not yet experienced a terribly severe winter that other veteran teachers have.

"A teacher at one of the other sites told me that when she first got married, they lived in a tent about 40 miles from the nearest village when it was 50 below zero all winter," Barnett tells Channel 3 News.

"That's too much for me! I am very comfortable with my 2 heat monitors and have no desire to rough it like her!"

Barnett will be chaperoning the group to various places in Cleveland, besides two Cavalier games at the Q.

The Alaskans will be visiting the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, two schools in Shaker Heights, the Metroparks Zoo, and the West Side Market.

Senior Cynthia Ekada is excited about all the trips, but mostly about seeing the Cleveland Cavaliers in person twice. "Both of these events make me very excited. But the main reason that we are going is because we all want to see LeBron," Cynthia tells us.
