Hunter Takes Life After Leading Police To Scene

Law enforcement officials said an incident north of Woolstock that left two hunters dead on Thursday appears to be the result of an accidental shooting and a suicide.

Authorities said Dee Phonuilai, 48, called 911 at about 10 a.m. to report a shooting at a public hunting area. They said the caller said a hunter had accidentally shot his hunting partner, Tan Khanmjoi, 44.

"This morning, I heard some police sirens about 10 o'clock and I didn't really know what was going on.  I thought maybe there was an accident at the home on the front end here," said Veronica Guyader, who lives nearby.

When officers and deputies arrived at the scene near 330th St. and Emmett, they said Phonuilai led them to the Khanmjoi's body. While they were searching, officers said the Phonuilai shot and killed himself.

Officers were close by at the time of the second shooting but no one else was hurt. The officers did not discharge their weapons, investigators said.

"We have a very tragic hunting accident that occurred about mid-morning this morning that ended up in the death of two young men," said Sheriff Paul Schultz.

Schultz said the men had been hunting squirrels.

"You have to treat everything as a crime scene and that's what we've done in this case," said Schultz.

Investigators said there's no indication of foul play.
