Teens facing sex charges for butt slaps
UPI ^ | July 22, 2007

Posted on 07/23/2007 11:47:17 AM PDT by beaversmom

MCMINNVILLE, Ore., July 22 (UPI) -- Two 13-year-old Oregon boys are facing serious sex charges for allegedly slapping female classmates' bottoms as a form of horseplay.

Police arrested Cory Mashburn and Ryan Cornelison of McMinnville and if convicted could be permanently marked as sex offenders, The Portland Oregonian said Sunday. The teens also could spend as long as 10 years in juvenile detention if found guilty.

While the boys' parents have opposed such a harsh penalty, McMinnville District Aattorney Bradley Berry said such youthful acts could have longstanding consequences for the alleged victims.

"These cases are devastating to children," he said. "They are life-altering cases."

Interviews with the boys' fellow students found other teens were engaging in similar behavior at the time and two of the female victims have since recanted their statements.

The Oregonian said the boys are due in court on Aug. 20 to answer to all charges stemming from the February event.

REad more about it on Dennis Prager’s blog—also see video of the 13 year old boys accused of a sex crime:

Which? Getting your butt slapped or being arrested as a sex offender?

‘”These cases are devastating to children,” he said. “They are life-altering cases.”’

Oh, puh-leese. These are adolescent males and most likely just need a stern talking to about the proper way to interact with the newly-interesting to them opposite gender. By this standard I’d probably have been labelled a sex offender for some of the stupid, juvenile things I did at that age.

The anti-male bashing crowd has completely taken over. I say unto the judge, the prosecutor and every one involved in the justice system that is ruining these kids lives, he who is without sin, cast the first stone. Because I can guarantee you that the majority of guys and girls have been guilty of playing grab-ass at sometime in their lives. This is pathetic and the prosecutor deserves a bullet.

Yep. We did too.

We would run around school popping the girls on the rear.

Some would turn around and chase us and beat the crap out of us.

Some of the more timid ones would tell the teacher and the teacher would whack us with a yard stick and make us apologize.

And that was the end of it.

Those girls are pushing 40 now and I doubt they even remember it. I doubt their lives have been ruined. I doubt they are still in therapy because of it.

I don't support such harshness.

However, we need to ask ourselves why we have such a coarse culture and why children behave like this, and why parents think it's no big deal.

Most of all, we need to ask ourselves "How do we turn this around, and raise children who will treat people with respect?"

One way to do so is, in fact, to impose draconian sentences so that the word goes out that misbehavior is subject to excessive punishment. That might change things. But if we don't want to do that, it begs the question: "What ought we to do?"

Sounds like DA Berry needs to go back to school and take some classes in common sense and priorities in prosecuting cases. It also sounds like McMinnville needs a new DA.

I was about 11 years old. It was winter. As I left the school somebody tackled me from behind, buried my face in the snow and then ran off. I guess today that would be attempted murder. My day, child's play.

I never found out who did it , but it just crossed my mind. It could have been my brother. ;-)

Um, because there’s nothing coarse about kids playing grab ass. It’s a natural stage in human development—that’s also why it’s no big deal.

The reactions of the adults involved are what’s making this entire issue more traumatic. They are the one making this a big deal when it should have been resolved quickly by the teachers.

These boys need proper adult supervision, not jail sentences. What happened to an adult pulling them aside and telling them to, “Cut it out!” What moron got a police officer involved?

The school staff who were involved should be fired, because they are clearly incompetent. GEESH!

Nobody has said that the kids shouldn’t be punished. They should be punished in a way to teach them that you can’t go around popping girls behinds.
Every generation from the dawn of mankind has done this horseplay so its not a new thing that is the sign of the times.
Kids mess up and do things they aren’t supposed to. They should be punished so that they will know that is unacceptable behavior. Not labled for the rest of their lives.
I can’t imagine these boys in 30 years. Being accountants, teachers, engineers, maybe even preachers with families of their own, having to register as a sex offender because they popped a girl on the butt in the schoolyard at age 13.

The most appropriate way to handle this is for an older brother to beat the tar out of the little idiot.

Worked on me. Never did that again.

Treating it as a criminal act is ludicrous.

One thing to note. These are 13 year old children. The fact that the principal even had to involve the police shows the lack of maturity on his part. Many worse things happened when I was growing up and I never saw the police in any school my entire K-12 education.

The fact that the police were even involved shows that principal has the maturity level of a 5 year old or lower. Totally pathetic!

Because it isn’t. Our culture is the most refined in history. Women have rights unknown to past cultures, and to many present ones.

Kids have been horsing around like this since before recorded history. Somehow they survived. I think these kids will too.

I think you do have a point there.

I have read about schools teaching kids in GRADE school to explore their sexuality. Telling young girls it’s ok to experiment with same sex relationships.

How very hypocritical.

Disclaimer: I do NOT approve of what these boys have been doing, but kids no longer are taught manners, limits and other important social skills. Most aren't anyway.
