Sausage saves knife accused woman

A woman accused of illegally carrying a knife has escaped a criminal conviction - thanks to a sausage.

Jane Bellas was charged when police found the kitchen knife after stopping her car on the A6 near Penrith.

The 29-year-old, of Brunswick Square, said she needed the knife on her fast food stall at the town's market.

Carlisle Crown Court accepted her explanation after health inspectors spotted her "tinkering with a generator there, while handling a sausage".

Tim Evans, prosecuting, said the crown accepted that she had a valid reason for carrying the knife in her car in January and offered no evidence against her.

Mrs Bellas was formally found not guilty and given £10 to cover her travelling expenses.
