AN American businessman spent Monday night in the Cairns watchhouse after he was caught filming up women's skirts on the Esplanade.

Dale Eric Christopher, 42, appeared in Cairns Magistrates' Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to filming the women inappropriately.

The court heard Christopher was arrested on Monday afternoon when concerned passers-by noticed him filming patrons outside the McDonald's restaurant in the CBD.

He admitted to police he had been filming women, focusing on their buttocks and breasts.

Police seized a video camera and 46 minutes of footage, including images of two women's underpants, filmed while they were eating.

Prosecutor Constable Samantha Montague said the women were unaware they were being filmed.

Duty lawyer Helen Price said Christopher arrived in Australia for business on June 14 and attended a brain-imaging technology meeting in Melbourne.

He came to Cairns with his wife and stayed in town while his wife went snorkelling on Monday.

The court heard he had lunch, including a few pints of beer, and then decided to get out his video camera.

"He is extremely remorseful," Ms Price said.

Magistrate Robert Spencer fined Christopher $300 and ordered police to return the camera, but not the footage.

No conviction was recorded.
