A Good Samaritan who stopped to help a crash victim finds himself the victim, when police said the very man he stopped to help, steals his SUV.
The whole thing started in Warren County along State Route 123, just north of State Route 28.
Officers said 26-year-old Robert Haas lost control of his car.
Some people stopped to see if he was okay, then he hopped in the SUV of one of the men who stopped to help, and took off.
According to investigators, it began with that single-car crash in Warren County, and ended with Haas crashing a second time, in the stolen SUV.
The first crash took place just after 10:00 p.m. Wednesday.
Shortly after, officers said Haas stole the SUV and the police pursuit began.
The chase finally ended just before 11:00 p.m. when police said Haas, the victim-turned-suspect crashed in Midland, suffering serious injuries.
Troopers said SUV Haas took Christmas gifts inside.
The other Good Samaritan's car which Haas first tried to get into, had children inside.
Major John Newsom, with the Warren County Sheriff's Office said, "It could have been a lot worse in a lot of different respects. If it was earlier in the evening, there would have been a lot of traffic on some of those roads. The time of night really benefitted the situation."
During the pursuit, an Ohio State Patrol car and a Clinton County deputy's car collided.
The deputy was not injured. The two troopers suffered minor injuries.
At this point, multiple jurisdictions are investigating.
Charges will be filed once the investigation is complete.
Haas is listed in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital, in Dayton.
