Mohd Ibrahim Kader Mydin couldn't quit smoking and his wife Rosina S. M. Mydin Pillay had liver problems. They were allegedly part of Al Arqam (an Islamic sect banned as deviant by the Malaysian government) and went to their co-coreligionist relatives for help. Four close relatives, aged between 17 and 50, allegedly subjected the couple to the brutal ritual which involved smashing their heads on a table and assaulting them repeatedly with crash helmets and brooms. A 15-year-old girl who discovered the beating was also beaten and is in critical condition in hospital.
Apparently the it worked -- Ibrahim definitely doesn't smoke anymore and Rosina no longer has any liver worries...
