This hospital is hiding behind the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) laws to cover up what appears to be GROSS negligence. Protecting other patient's rights? Sure... So much for the new Florida law referenced in the story helping this patient learn why this outrageous "treatment" was done. This hospital should probably be shut down based on this action. Would any sane person take a chance on getting proper treatment there, even emergency treatment? This is downright scary!!!

If someone on that floor had that disease and the hospital gave out the info without getting sued, they would get sued for much more from the person with it because of the HIPAA laws. I am not defending the laws, just explaining the hospital's likely position.

Terrible story. even worse, it's from January, 2006, and there's no further word on where this ended up.

I did find this headline "Amputee can see hospital records: A judge rules in favor of a woman devastated by flesh-eating bacteria" dated June 2006 but didn't pay to read the full article. http://moreresults.factiva.com/results/index/index.aspx?ref=KRTOR00020060625e26o00004
