Sad state of affairs in the UK that someone has to rely on hitching a lift to get to an emergency, but great that she manages it.

I'm not so sure it is a "sad state of affairs". The article doesn't mention why she doesn't have a vehicle -- and she is a volunteer. It's not like she's a paid EMT without a supplied vehicle. The fact that she figured out a way to help out sans transportation of her own speaks volumes to her desire to help out. She could have just as easily said, "I can't help. I don't have a car."
