Two 13-year-old Oregon boys are facing serious sex charges for slapping female classmates' bottoms. They were accused of subjecting the girls to "sexual contact by touching a sexual or intimate part" of the body "by means of forcible compulsion." The boys could spend as long as 10 years in juvenile detention if found guilty.

It's unbelieveable that cases like this happen. It's stupid, and worse, its demeaning to everyone who has suffered from REAL unwanted sexual conduct.
I have a 12-year-old daughter, and I can assure you that she would find being slapped on the butt by a classmate uncomfortable, demeaning, embarrassing, and inappropriate. I'm personally delighted to see the school (and the law) taking unwanted sexual contact seriously.
While I think that 10 years in juvenile detention is excessive, I also note that that's the maximum sentence they could be subject to, not the sentence they will actually receive (or serve).
Suspension?? Definitely! Expulsion? Maybe... But jail time?? Are you FREAKING kidding me? These are KIDS we're talking about. That's what being a kid is all about! Learning what is acceptable, and what is not acceptable. Bring back swats in the Principals office!
Yes, a slap on the butt is all those things you mentioned, uncomfortable, demeaning, embarrassing, and inappropriate. But this should be handled non-judicially.
This is crazed! Seriously, it's not like they raped the girls. I can definitely see the need for some sort of punishment, but the punishment should fit the crime. Jail time at Juvie is way too much for that, and I am saying that as a father of a 15 year old girl.
