This is the purpose of allowing a right to a concealed weapons permit: the crooks don't know who will shoot back. This pair of would-be robbers found out about this the hard way.

If only more events like this happened, we'd have fewer crimes. Though I can only imagine how anti-gun enthusiasts will view this: fluke? Or were both parties (victims and crooks) wrong to have guns? etc...

I'm all for owning and carrying handguns. More states should follow Arizonas laws of carrying. It's ok to wear a pistol anywhere, as long as it's visible. That not deterrent enough for you? Then carry a concealed one, but only after taking accredited safety and firing classes. These guys may practice at a range, but that's not saying they can hit anything. With as many rounds as they fired, who knows what might have happened, since they are probably unaware of even how far a bullet can travel.

Several states do have similar "open carry" legislation as those in Arizona. However, a problem with open carry is that if everyone carries out in the open, then the odds are better for a non-openly carrying person to not have any firearm on them at all. Yes, if you are openly carrying, you stand a good chance of being left alone by a criminal. However, others who are not openly carrying become the focus of criminals under the assumption that they are unarmed. Violent crime is not deterred in such a case, its focus is just shifted.
On the other hand, if there is a possibility of a person being a "concealed carry", then everyone holds a bit of deterrence. Unlike open carry areas, there is much more uncertainty regarding the possibility of a potential victim fighting back (with deadly force). That uncertainty is a form of deterrence (for everyone). Thankfully, most of the US has come to this understanding in their legislation:
Sadly, I'm located in one of those holes of irrationality (Maryland and DC) that "allow it" but make it effectively impossible to implement. The "home of democracy and liberty" my ass.
