A San Francisco rookie police officer who shot himself to death during a late-night gathering at his San Mateo apartment was legally drunk, toxicology tests show. Gustafson shot himself in the neck at 1:40 a.m. during a gathering of as many as 15 people, as he was showing a woman how police are taught to prevent someone from using a gun against them, authorities said.

I read some of the comment on SFGate's site and they looked so very familiar to one who has received TisT many years already. It was of course a sad accident, but to claim that the paper should not have written about it because he was a police, or that the comment writers should think of all the heroic things polices do every day. I think they missed the point. He was acting very stupidly and had to pay dearly for it. If the story teaches someone else to think twice before trying something like that, it has accomplished a good thing.
