Mayor of Oak Lawn, Ill., has extra stop signs installed at troublesome intersections. The main STOP sign remains, but under it another sign might note: "IN THE NAAME OF LOVE." or "STOP. RIGHT THERE PILGRIM." or, my favorite, "BILLION DOLLAR FINE."

On first read, the temptation is to pass this off as a humorous story about an innovative public official's attempt to make the roadway safer.
On deeper thought, it is a sad commentary about the flippant attitudes of Americans towards road rules, safe conduct while at the wheel of a potentially dangerous machine and the lack of respect most of us self-centered people have become.
Its not the simple fact that these signs are needed but that the story only raises minor amusement and not the outrage and disgust for actions that are viewed as so commonplace that they do not stand out as a symptom of their greater underlying societal problem that is sad.
Worse is that I now sound like my father! :-)

I don't drive, I walk everywhere (or bus) with my kids, and I'm forever complaining about people who breeze through the stopsigns. So, while I kinda chuckled over this, I'm with you. It's sad that this is what it takes!

Looks like someone took the photoshop contests on Worth1000.com to heart! Yep, saw those before, but not for real!

Although this is a cute, attention grabbing idea, my first thought is that now someone will argue in court that they thought the whole thing was a joke, or there will be an accident and the city will be liable for 'non-standard' traffic sign.

An effective cure for stop-sign/red light runners? How about pop-up spike strips that come up on red, or if they don't detect your car stationary for at least 15 seconds?
