London 2012 organisers are at the centre of an extraordinary row after an image of Myra Hindley, the Moors Murderer, was included in a montage of images of British achievements designed to promote the upcoming Games.
“The video is not for general public use and has been used many times over the last few years to show to the tourism trade. There has never been a complaint made about the video up until this point. However, if any offence has been caused, we will withdraw it from use with immediate effect.”
A No 10 source added: “It is a total disgrace that this proud night for Britain has been sullied by this grotesque prank.
“Whoever was responsible must be found and fired immediately.”
Even Hindley sent a letter from jail suggesting her portrait be removed from the exhibition because it had “a sole disregard not only for the emotional pain and trauma that would inevitably be experienced by the families of the Moors victims but also the families of any child victim.”
