A free tip: Put numbers on all desks. Then a professor can say something like "Miss Sixteen, what is the speed of darkness?" or "Mister Eight, what is the capital of Vanuatu?"

A math teacher in town has divided his class into rows and columns... and assigned letters and numbers. Instead of names it's b6 or g2. It's not for privacy though. It's to teach math concepts.

This certainly didn't surprise me as I recently went to the hospital for an ECG which my Dr had to order for me to get it BUT they would not send him the results unless he faxed them a letter signed by me saying it was OK.

Living less than a half hour from the UI and having worked there for over 30 years, this story did not surprise me.
The administration there has always been way off the mark where matters of being overly PC are concerned - no matter who the president or faculty has been.
The normal tendency at the UI to err on the side of sheer lunacy has gone into hyperdrive post-911 as it has in general for the whole of the country.
IN 10,000 years, after our current 'civilization' has long since turned to dust - some archeologist from some other 'civilization' either here on earth or from some other planet will look at the 'stellar performance' we turned in and conclude that it was only by the sheerest of pure dumb luck that the human race lasted as long as it did and laugh when they discover our arrogant proclamations of being fit to be 'in charge' and at the top of earth's food chain.

It's another case of over-reading of laws and regulations. The fear of lawsuits has driven this country insane!

My wife is a college professor (now retired). When a student fails, the parents go ballistic since they are paying the bills. She cannot tell them why the student failed, unless the student signs an agreement (because of the federal law). Hilarity ensues when an actual meeting takes place between professor, student, and parents. "You didn't attend class???!!", "You didn't do any assignments!!??!", "Why are we spending any money on your education at all!!!!!"
