An Ohio high school decides that two students who joined the military may not wear their uniforms while receiving diplomas. Says all students must wear cap and gown.

It sounds as if those two young men need to go back to basic training for a refresher course. They should have learned that they are responsible for finding out what the "uniform of the day" is and then wearing the correct one. They also should have learned to follow the orders of the "officers" in charge.
In this situation the school administrators would be considered the officers in charge and the uniform of the day is cap and gown.
The school's proposal for them to wear their military uniforms for the color guard and pledge of allegiance and then change to cap and gown for the ceremony seems very reasonable.

I was going to make a similar comment, but I don't think I could have said it any better. Would this have made news if someone had wanted to wear any other uniform (Boy Scout, police, etc.)?
