This is what certain ones in our government in the US are trying for too.
We can't carry a knife (or any number of items considered weapons) without good reason, either (I'm in South Australia). I don't feel it is restrictive - if you need an item for a good reason, then it is no problem, and if you don't then I much prefer that people don't have them :)
