We Give Up.
We gave it a good try, but we just can't deal with the spam anymore.
All we wanted was a free place where people could share their "weird news" links. It was ad-supported, but even with thousands of page views per day, we made about $5/month on ad clicks. Thus, no budget to improve the software to deal with upwards of 1,000 spam posts (and attempted posts) per day.
But in March we upgraded the software anyway, because we wanted to support the community that grew up around Groxx.
But the spammers kept coming: the more popular Groxx got, the more that came. At the end, Groxx was (according to Alexa) among the top 85,000 sites in the world -- but of the more than 22,000 registered users, we estimate 90 percent were spammers.
We spent more than an hour a day deleting spams -- and volunteer admins put in at least that much time as well. But if we take a break for an hour, there are as many as 50 spam posts by the time we get back.
So we're giving up. The spammers win again. They spam because a few people click and buy their crap, making spam profitable. So while we blame spammers, the real blame goes to the tiny percentage of those who buy from spammers. Congratulations: you killed another legitimate web site.
To make an offer for this really fantastic domain name, contact us. But we caution you: don't try to build a site on it using Pligg.
Last, thank you to the users who tried to make this a great site, and especially to those who volunteered their time to moderate the posts, and delete the tsunami of spam.
